Fit-up of parliamentary committee rooms

Project description

Retrofits in a heritage classified building for Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC), located partly under a sidewalk near the Parliament Hill. The project consisted in the fit-up of four parliamentary committee rooms and many facilities related to their operation (media room, security, kitchen, storage, etc.). The project was carried out in accordance with strict safety requirements of the House of Commons and the RCMP. The design of 2 of the 4 rooms included the addition of broadcasting systems.

Challenges and Solutions

  • Aiming for a Green Globe (Three Globes) certification.
  • Existing building located partly under a sidewalk and sharing its electromechanical infrastructures with the adjacent building, the Fairmont Château Laurier, without interrupting operations.
  • Reusing existing HVAC systems with strict requirements.
  • Using the building’s long and narrow configuration to adapt the HVAC systems to the new functional requirements: security and confidentiality maintained between public spaces and committee rooms.
  • IT multimedia elements required the installation of a specialized electrical distribution in the committee rooms and the 4 UPS units with an isolated ground wire.
