Expansion and retrofit in integrated design

Project description

PAGEAU MOREL carried out the important expansion project at John Abbott College with the construction of a new 10,500 m² building dedicated to the science and health technology courses. The new building includes classrooms, teaching laboratories with chemical hoods, staff offices, as well as areas for student services. This project was designed by integrating sustainable development principles and LEED criteria.

Challenges and Solutions

  • Sustainable development principles and LEED Gold criteria.
  • New construction adjacent to heritage buildings.
  • Integration of a new 1,220 m² agora annexed to existing buildings.
  • Environmentally-friendly construction.
  • Optimization by EE4 and PEP energy simulation.
  • Geothermal energy, hot and cold radiant slabs, solar energy collection, alternative high efficiency recovery without frost.
  • Natural lighting used.
  • Installation of a 900 kW generator that can be used for the entire campus.
  • Replacing the steam supply for heating and domestic hot water on the campus’ various buildings.
