Lassonde Buildings

2002-2005/Montréal (Québec)/32,700 m2/352,000 ft2

New construction in fast-track mode, by phases and with construction management

Project description

Construction of Pierre-Lassonde and Claudette-Mackay-Lassonde buildings during the École Polytechnique’s expansion project. The installations include classrooms, offices, laboratories for electrical and computer engineering, as well as the IT department. The school’s library and server room were also moved.

Challenges and Solutions

  • First Canadian institutional project certified LEED-NC Gold.
  • Installation of a 500 kW generator. In the event of a failure, the emergency generator acts as a backup and feeds the building’s vital systems in order to allow for safe evacuation.
  • With an ecological aim in mind in order to reduce water consumption from sanitary equipment, PAGEAU MOREL designed a rainwater recovery system with a 170 m³ tank. The filtered water is used to supply urinals and toilets.
  • Energy performance 60 % higher than the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings standard. With 46 LEED points—the highest score in Canada—the Lassonde Buildings inaugurated in 2005 have become a reference in terms of sustainable construction.
