Server Room Growth

Project description

Solving uninterruptible power supply (UPS) issues and increasing server room capacity for clients at the CDP Capital Centre. This project aimed at increasing the capacity of four data centres from 190 kW to 280 kW (overall capacity), increasing the power supply reliability using a second generator, improving the redundant power distribution (2N) by taking advantage of the full capacity of three UPS systems, installing an uninterruptible power supply with a capacity of 40 kW in place temporarily. PAGEAU MOREL assisted the client in the development of the construction budget. However, a large part of the budget was prepared by the contractor chosen to carry out the project. The mandate implied interruptions in the server rooms which had to be included in the schedule. Following the client’s request, these interruptions were postponed.

Challenges and Solutions

  • Construction in an occupied building.
  • Because the project affected the server rooms of different clients, all client needs had to be met.
  • Very precise site surveys were conducted due to the lack of space in the existing server rooms.
  • By optimizing the sharing of backup equipment, this project cost half of what it could have cost because of the 2N distribution.
  • Design maximized the use of existing electromechanical equipment (UPS, generators, etc.).
